Clif Bar Design Collaboration

I’m excited to announce my latest design collaboration – a limited edition beanie (or toque as they say in Canada) for Clif Bar. Ever since I was a grom growing up in Minnesota, I’ve always been crazy about hats, especially winter hats. One of my favorite hobbies is making hats. This summer, I was so stoked when the good folks at Clif Bar asked me to draw up some designs for a new beanie for their website.

Here’s the hat and the inspiration:

There are only 200 of them so be sure to get yours now. It would make a good Valentine’s day present or you could even start your Christmas shopping early and get one for next winter! They have a great slouchy fit and a fleece liner to keep your ears warm no matter what your head size.

Here’s the link to the Clif Bar store:

The whole process of designing this hat was so fun. I thought I’d share some of the other design sketches I came up with:

Mt. Carlyle Lodge

I just returned from a week at Mt. Carlyle Lodge in the backcountry wilderness of Interior, British Columbia. At Mt. Carlyle, you heli into the lodge which serves as your bascamp, and then you ski tour to access the terrain from there. We had good powder snow, epic terrain to access, and I was surrounded by an entertaining group of 10 rowdy Canadians. The Lodge itself is cozy and slightly rustic, with solar electricity and wood-burning stoves. In the Kootenays of British Columbia, these lodges are common and people go on these trips all the time, but it was my first Canadian lodge experience. Here are some pictures from my adventure:

Everything was weighed and put into piles for loading. You are allowed 65 lbs. per person.

The Lodge – I love the Tibetan prayer flags hung outside, and you can see a few solar panels too.

Sunrise over the Kootenays. The mountain range extends for hundreds of miles, which makes for the most unbelievable views.

I love the light of sunrise, with its pink and purple glow.

The same mountain an hour later – it’s amazing how quickly the light changes this time of year!

Sunrise on the top and sunset on the bottom. I was doing a photo shoot with Canadian photographer, Steve Ogle so we were chasing the best light all day! We got some epic ski shots but I can’t post them yet!

Pizza for dinner! Eryn (pictured behind the pizza) was our chef. She made the most delicious food – homemade bread everyday, tasty dessert and soups and stews. Great soul food to feed a very hungry group!

A postcard I drew from one of my photographs. I was very inspired by the area! Check out the Lodge’s website for more info:

I came out from Mt. Carlyle yesterday and went directly to my next lodge, Valhalla Mountain Touring:

Dream Vans of New Zealand

As you probably know by now, I am slightly obsessed with vans. No sports car for me, my dream vehicle is a van. So when I went to New Zealand to ski this summer, I couldn’t help noticing all the cool vans around. Here are some of my favorites:

Prepare for Movember!

Every year, tens of thousands of men sprout mustaches to take part in Movember. For those of you unfamiliar with Movember (the month formerly known as November), it is a worldwide movement to raise awareness for men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer.

IMG_0060

When someone decided to give this lovely Snowbird billboard a mustache, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to embrace this cause and participate by donning a mustache myself.

How can you get involved? Registration starts November 1 and you start with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, grow your best ‘stache – whether it’s handlebars, fu man chu, or the walrus. Go wild! Raise funds online by seeking sponsorship for your facial hair farming efforts. Don’t forget to claim them. Make sure to talk about why you are doing it to start conversations about men’s health. Men typically put off visits to the doctor and pay less attention to their health than they should. With knowledge and education, men can increase their chances of early disease detection, diagnosis and effective treatment. Girls – let’s rock some mustaches too. Spread the word. Let’s save some bothers.

At the end of the month, celebrate by throwing a Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Parties held around the world.

Prepare for Movember.
